Hey man, just a few things to think about:

First of all, what state do you live in? Some states laws about self defense are different...they vary across the country and its worth looking into. Bottom line, you're responsible for what goes down. Secondly, the AR-15 shoots a 5.56..its a small ass bullet moving pretty quick. Unless you're using hollowpoints, overpenetration is a big issue...especially if you live in an apartment. You run the risk of the round going through drywall and whatever else into your neighbors apartment. Its a slim chance you're actually going to hit them..but it aint worth it either way. Long story short, a shotgun or .45 are awsome weapons for the house. I reccomend a glock 21 (.45 ACP). Use hollow points with this and you're set..its a slow, heavy, big round and over penetration is not an issue. If using a shotgun, dont go all gung ho and buy 00 buck or slugs..over penetration is too extreme. Large birdshot does just fine, and you dont have to worry about your neighbors..or your own property.

Whatever you do..make sure the trespasser is an immediate threat to you, or a loved one..

i couldnt imagine trying to hit someone with an assault rifle in the middle of the night if someone broke into the house... bullets would be flying wild... i like that taurus revolver that shoots .410 shotgun shells. seems like you have a better chance of hitting what you are shooting at when you are groggy and in the dark with that than anything else

the problem with using an AR15 as a house sweeper is the flash suppression...

Good luck seeing ANYTHING if you try and fire that thing in the dark.

^^^Agreed unless you have a fuckin supressor on that thing and then you're just bein ridiculous. You're chick is a bad ass for buyin you an AR 15, truly.. but go invest in an 18" remington tactical shotgun, or better yet a handgun.
