Hey man, just a few things to think about:
First of all, what state do you live in? Some states laws about self defense are different...they vary across the country and its worth looking into. Bottom line, you're responsible for what goes down. Secondly, the AR-15 shoots a 5.56..its a small ass bullet moving pretty quick. Unless you're using hollowpoints, overpenetration is a big issue...especially if you live in an apartment. You run the risk of the round going through drywall and whatever else into your neighbors apartment. Its a slim chance you're actually going to hit them..but it aint worth it either way. Long story short, a shotgun or .45 are awsome weapons for the house. I reccomend a glock 21 (.45 ACP). Use hollow points with this and you're set..its a slow, heavy, big round and over penetration is not an issue. If using a shotgun, dont go all gung ho and buy 00 buck or slugs..over penetration is too extreme. Large birdshot does just fine, and you dont have to worry about your neighbors..or your own property.
