Going smaller up front is like going bigger in the rear, gives you more low end. If it were too much and you wanted to "tame" it a little you would want to go larger on the front or smaller in the rear. Front sprockets are less money and for every tooth you go down in the front is like adding ~3 in the rear, think it's closer to about 3.25T when you work out the ratio. Can't remembr of the top of my head and my sons going nutz so gotta go.
