I would love to see 250 vs 250, the problem is the EPA made it clear enough to the big 4 that 2 strokes, even dirt bikes on a closed course would eventually be held to unrealistic emission limits.
Despite what the author of your article says, the big 4 saw the writing on the wall and started putting all their efforts into the 4 stroke before the limits ever went into effect.
Direct injection 2 strokes have the ability to meet the projected emission limits but the added cost might have made it worth it to the big 4 to just go with the 4 strokes, either that or they just assumed the limit would get lower and lower year after year so they just took the leap and went 4 stroke.
They make 250's run against 450's and they make 125's run against 250's, it's clear they wanted to make sure the 4 strokes were winning so they would sell.
