edit: i was told that in 2002 or so either i'm retarded or it changed (prob retarded) but i just found this so ^^ my previous statement is wrong..... In order to receive a skydiving license, you must complete the AFF training program which consists of 6 skydives, then make 12-15 more skydives as you learn the finer points. When you have met basic requirements and have made 20-25 skydives, you will take a CSPA test and upon passing it receive your "SOLO" license. There is also an A, "B", "C", and a "D" license and other ratings you can work toward after you receive your "SOLO" certificate, however, you can skydive at any drop zone worldwide with only an "A" license. You will be able to make solo skydives before you complete your "A" license requirements, but not until you've completed the AFF training program.

The place I go doesn't require tandems first you start out with static line then you do hop and pops after that its AFF and its cheap $150 first jump with 2 hour class and then $50 a jump after that which includes gear rental and if you have your own gear it's only $20 for the ride up

You don't have to do any tandems to get your skydive license. You need to do the AFF course which is 7 jumps with certified instructors who jump out holding onto you until you open your parachute and then at that time you're on your own.(you should have a radio where the instructor is on the ground talking to you and helping you land). After you finish the 7 jump course ( as long as you don't fail any) you can then finally jump solo. You get a card with a list of tasks to complete on your next few jumps. One task being get 25 jumps. After that is filled. Out you can get your A license and can jump with other skydivers.
I have a C license and over 550 jumps... I miss the sky!!! Stupid broken hand :/

I guess they do it way different at my local dz. I was only able to do 6 jumps before my lame ass shoulder put an end to it. But their aff course consists of 25 jumps where you practice different things in each one. I never did a static line jump or tandem. Also the hop and pop isn't until like jump 20 or something.
I guess every dz is different tho, plus some aren't uspa certified or whatever so they pretty can do whatever.
