09 CRF450R questions
Posted by: jeremyRockit - 06-12-2013, 04:28 PM - Forum: Quads / Dirtbikes / Motard / Trials - No Replies

Hey fellers, I just picked up a 2009 450 for $2k last weekend (the guy lost his job) and I had a few questions. I don't know much about it other than the FI and a few of the parts that are visible from the outside (ASV levers/perches, bars, plastics, etc.) I rode it a few times back and forth down the street to make sure everything works. However, there are a few things I'm unsure of. What is the usual starting procedure? He told me to easy pump the kick start 3-4x and then start kicking it hard. Is that the same procedure everyone uses?

The shifter is really stiff in comparison to the Yamaha I just got rid of when shifting up and down through the gears and that may be just because of it needs an oil change but I'm not real sure. Also the clutch feels like it's either on or off. When I start to squeeze it it feels like it comes to a hard spot then 'clicks' in. Not an audible click but a feeling of a click. Is that normal? Also the engine makes a LOT of racket in comparison to my 04 YZ450F. It sounds like the cam chain in my 636 when the tensioner becomes loose, but I have researched and found that this bike has an automatic cam chain tensioner. Should I go ahead and put an APE manual tensioner on? Do I need to start out with an entire motor rebuild just to be safe?

One of the first things I'm going to do is an oil change and I have heard there are 2 seperate compartments for oiling the clutch side and stator side, or something like that. I am going to get a new chain, plugs and a couple other odds and ends and want to know any mods or upgrades I should do now or make sure they've been done. Also on programming the ECU to different mapping stages, how do I obtain the program to do this, or is there any how-to's on doing this correctly?

I yanked the achilles tendon off my heel bone in Feb. and I'm still not 100% and back to riding so I want to take this time not riding hard to get the bike setup how I want it. Thanks in advance for any advice.

 What's this ticking noise?
Posted by: always.anthony - 06-12-2013, 12:14 AM - Forum: Help and How To - Replies (11)

2004 kawasaki 636

kinda high pitched ticking noise at stock idle when bike is straight up. kinda coming from the right side of the motor.

at stock idle leaned on the kick stand no noise.

as soon as the bike is leaned off the kickstand or any more to the right ticking stays.

any throttle input/increase in idle and the noise almost immediately stops.
.
Sound has became noticeable after I tightened the stock cct.

This isn't a loose cct rattle.

Anyone heard of something like this before? I wouldn't be concerned if the ticking was consistent, but it instantly goes away as soon as the bike is leaned to the left.

Here is the old beat. 04 f4i. Nothing special at all. As a matter of a fact I hated it. has the rr front end swap. Previous owner didn't take care of the bike for shit and it was so nasty it simply couldn't be cleaned up.
Broke the bike completely down with the help of Brup and rebuilt her from the ground up.
Upgrades include:
Atown subcage,
905 full adjustable clip ons
RSC lever
fork seals
Jaco dual cal bracket
Full powder coat
new custom reinforced subframe
New rear rim.
Fresh Tires
Fresh fluids
New brake lines
New throttle cables and I think that's it.
The result is this
Radiators are getting scarce, Anyone tried these two models on their 636 yet?
Posted by: oemsrt4 - 06-10-2013, 11:12 PM - Forum: Stunt Discussion - Replies (21)

I just put a fresh engine in my 03-04 636 and want to preserve it for as long as I can, My last bike ran/runs awesome, and the cooling setup never let it break 200 degrees. That is my goal with this new engine.

My first choice was an 05-06 636 radiator but didn't find any on ebay in minty condition and reasonable price. I was looking at maybe trying an 09+ R1 radiator since they have two nice Panasonic fans already built in, or a zx10 radiator and making my own R1/R6 dual fan brackets for it.

Here are some pictures for comparison:

05-06 636

R1

zx10

I am leaning towards trying the R1 radiator with dual fans already built in out, wondering if anyone has tried it yet? I will have to make my cage and mounts for sure but its going on a steel frame so a off the shelf radiator cage most likely work anyways.

Let me know what you think!
